The Governors House in Newark is a fantastic building housing a cafe spread across three floors. Downstairs you find a small takeout section at the front and a cosy set of seating at the back next to the counter. Upstairs on the next floor are even more tables with a view out onto the street and the edge of the market. One more floor up is a more private dining area with a big table perfect for a party or event. I found that while hunting down the toilets 🙂
The day we visited they were offering a set of specials on the board for £8.95. I was very tempted by the Cheesy Bacon Turnover which was described as ‘Bacon and cheese encased in flaky pastry‘ but as it was being baked to order and was going to take 20 mins we didn’t choose that. I was glad that they did tell people though as at least you know it is coming out freshly made.
The choice that could not be resisted, especially as it was in the season, was The Governor’s Christmas Sandwich listed as ‘Toasted artisan bread with turkey breast, sausage meat, stuffing and cranberry sauce, served with a jug of turkey gravy‘
THE GOVERNORS CHRISTMAS SANDWICH
The Governor’s Christmas Sandwich certainly fit the bill and the occasion, it was the sort of sandwich one might be rustling up on Boxing Day with all the leftovers from the main event.
I do love a club sandwich and that was kind of the feeling with this stacked up whopper that came with a really big jug of tasty thick gravy.
SANDWICH CLOSE-UP
A closer look at the sandwich reveals all the layers of filling, including some very generous thickly cut Turkey that was actually quite moist and juicy unlike most Turkey dinners I have endured in Xmas past
The toasted bread was lovely and the cranberry sauce was applied just in the right amount so that it did not overpower. The stuffing was really good too but perhaps there was a bit too much of it and it kind of melded into the sausage meat and was a distraction to the taste buds
Having said all that this was a jolly good Xmas sandwich and served with that big jug of gravy was a most enjoyable feast.
On the Main sandwich menu there were plenty of other tasty sounding options available outside of the Holiday season.
Three classic Meat sandwiches in the ‘Extra Special‘ section were very tempting with combinations featuring ‘Roast Aberdeen Angus Topside of Beef‘, ‘Outdoor Bread Apple Cider glazed roast Pork‘ and ‘Italian Mortadella Ham‘ all looked great.
A trio of the ‘Governors Posh Cheese on Toast’ also vyed for my attention; ‘Colston Basset Stilton‘, ‘Red Leicester‘ and ‘Chevre Goats Cheese’ were all possibilities but in the end I had cast my eyes to the foot of the menu and was seeking out something hot from the ‘Something Warming‘ section/
Most days it would have been a straight fight between the ‘Club Sandwich‘ and the ‘Fish Finger Sandwich‘ but for some reason today I picked out the less classical sausage type of sandwich ‘Sibleys Butchers finest Sausage meat Patty, cheddar cheese & our own caramelized red onions‘
SIBLEYS BUTCHErS FINEST SAUSAGE MEAT PATTY
My choice on this occasion was the Sibleys Butchers finest Sausage meat Patty, cheddar cheese & our own caramelized red onions for two reasons. Firstly I had my heart set on a sausage sandwich before I had seen the menu, but then secondly when I read ‘Sausage meat Patty’ and ‘Cheddar Cheese’ I was thinking of the classic patty melt which is one of my all time favourite sandwiches.
Ok so that sandwich is typically a toasted one but the way that this one ate made it very similar. A meat patty made of crumbly sausage meat, nicely charred and coated with a thick layer of molten cheese was giving out breakfast cheese burger vibes. A generous layer of sweet caramelised onion almost like an onion marmalade was given my taste buds a treat. An absolute belter of a sandwich
I really loved this sandwich, it was hearty, tasty and very moorish. The only thing that could have made it more of a treat would have been if the bread was lightly toasted like a patty melt and to add in some more texture to the bite
For the record the sandwiches came with a side of crisps and some homemade coleslaw which was actually rather decent. Personally I am not a fan of crisps with my sandwich, call me a heathen but I’d rather have chips or nothing 🧐😎🤣
The Governor’s House in Newark was an excellent find, set in a lovely old building it was warm and welcoming and was serving up some interesting and tasty sounding sandwiches.
