C. Brumpton Butchers – “traditional family butchers” – and pies and sausage rolls too!

C Brumpton Butchers have two shops, one on Melton Road in West Bridgford, and one in Cotgrave Village on Plumtree Road. I have visited the one in West Bridgford a couple of times now. It first came to my attention when I saw their meat and products at Harry Wheatcrofts garden centre so I thought that I should track down on of the shops and get the stuff straight from the source. If you check out their story on their website it makes really great reading for any locavore and hunter of excellent quality meats. I particularly was drawn to the passage on their home page

“family run Nottingham butchers  spanning four generations; there can be no greater testament to our success  than our continued provision of a wide range of exceptional meats to the local  community. All beef, lamb and pork is sourced from a local farm at Plumtree, or reared by ourselves at our own farm,  naturally fed on grass and corn to ensure the most tender and succulent cuts  possible.”

Pies at C Brumptons

I would advise not to come here if you are hungry as they always seem to have a lot of excellent looking pies on display. They seem to do the usual standard fare in the pie arena with Steak, Steak and Kidney, Chicken, Steak and Ale, and Minced Beef and Onion Pies on offer, plus Pasties, Sausage Rolls and Pork Pies.

Sausaeg Rolls at C BrumptonSliced sausage rolls

I managed to escape pie temptation and left with just a couple of sausage rolls (although I am planning on coming back for a pies at some point). To be honest I wish that I had not been so restrained. It was a good sausage roll, nice flaky pastry and solid meat filling, with just a little bit of herb seasoning. I liked the fact that they look homemade and not like all those sad processed efforts that people seem happy enough to buy. They should go to their local butchers or bakers as they are loads better, taste nice, and often cheaper as well. There is the added benefit of helping a local business and not lining the pockets of a conglomerate fat cat.

Smoked Wensleydale

It is not just about the meat and pies at Brumpton they also had a reasonable selection of cheeses on the counter as well and I was not able to resist picking up a piece of smoked Wensleydale Cheese. It was very creamy and has a lovely smoky smell and taste that goes really well with a nice bit of crusty bread.

I do like to find a good local butcher and this one is a good find indeed. If you are on Melton Road in West Bridgford or passing through Cotgrave Village, I recommend that you stop in and pick up some good quality meats.
