Lowes @ No.8 in Compton Acres is a fairly new cafe on the scene in the bustling Shopping Centre just off Compton Acres Road. It sits nestled between the Tesco Express and the Ala Turka restaurant in the space formerly occupied by a wedding dress shop.

I have been in 3 or 4 times over the last couple of weeks, and not just so that I could write a blog about it, mainly because the food is great, the people are really nice, and it is a really great space to sit and ponder life while munching your lunch. I probably would have been more times but some days the place has been so packed that I was not able to squeeze myself in comfortably among the crowds.

I have been in often enough though to work my way through many of their freshly made and home baked offerings. Lets have a gander at what we have scoffed for our luncheon 🙂

Breakfast Menu

I always do like to test out the breakfast situation at any new cafe that I find. I like breakfast for lunch and I love it when places serve it all day and not just until 11am! It’s not just because I purport to be some sort of breakfast critic having written about at least 50 plus local brekkies 🙂 I really do love how comforting this meal is

I ordered the Full English which was listed on the menu as being ‘2 Bacon, 2 Sausage, Beans, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, and Scrambled Eggs‘ for £6. I was, as you will expect by now, going all in!

I was happy to find that also came with toast, and I ordered a cup of tea as one does to help wash it down.

The Full English Breakfast

The Full English at Lowes No 8 turned out to be a breakfast prepared with a healthier slant than many places. This was not to be your standard greasy spoon effort in any way, shape, or form. I learnt that at Lowes they do not fry anything as they are trying to promote healthier eating habits.

The options for eggs was scrambled or poached so I opted for scrambled, and I was happy with that as despite my desire for a fried egg with a runny yolk, I actually quite fancied the idea of some scrambled egg to put on my slices of toast.

The sausages were meaty and quite solid, I wasn’t quite sure how they had been cooked but they did taste a bit better than perhaps they looked. I think that they would make a decent sausage sandwich!

The bacon was super crispy in places, just as I love, so I was very happy with those two slices that I was eating. As I munched my way through the breakfast someone came in with a big order for bacon cobs, a return customer I could tell, so I reckon that the bacon butties would be good too.

All in all that was a pretty decent little plate of brunch-time breakfast and I would come back again for another one. Obs I have been back but I ate some other stuff too 🙂

Homemade Quiche and Salad

On my first visit I had spotted a small chalkboard offering homemade quiche and salad for just under 5 quid. I was intrigued so asked if they made it here and learned that they made a vegetable quiche and a meat quiche (today with ham and cheese) every day ready for the lunch rush.

Well then no prizes for guessing what the next lunchtime myfoodhunt mission was going to be, I was coming back for a slice of that!

The Ham and Cheese quiche was really very good, perfect crust, nicely browned topping and lots of soft loveliness laying in between the two. It was warmed just right so that everything was melding away inside.

It was one of the most enjoyable slices of quiche I have had for ages. I felt as if it had just come freshly baked from the oven, and you know what? I reckon that it probably just had

The Salad was really good, a nice mix of leafy greens, chopped up bits of pepper, red onion, cucumber and tomato, with a drizzle of balsamic to add some sweetness.

I even liked the homemade coleslaw, it was not at all acidic like some shop bought or catering coleslaw can be. It must have been good as I actually ate it 🙂

Jacket Potato Menu

Another MyFoodHunt quest was to check out the jacket potato situation. I like mine with a nice crispy baked skin so I was delighted to find that was how they were being served here at Lowes. On a previous visit we asked if they had any and were told that they were not quite crispy enough yet, so it seems that they like to serve them just as we like to eat them. Most excellent news!#

I had one with the classic offering of cheese and baked beans and I was really surprised, but not unhappy at both the size of the spud and that it also came with a side salad. This kind of healthier lunching could become habit forming 🙂

There were a lot of beans and they had arrived in a large pot alongside by baked potato. I was glad that the portion was generous as I was to really need it to help eat all that potato. One again that side salad was immense so this ended up being another great lunch outing

Tuna mayo baguette

As one might expect they serve up all the usual suspects in panini, baguettes, and sandwiches that you can eat in or takeaway.

This Tuna Mayo effort was a most enjoyable lunch snack, the side salad, that lovely homemade coleslaw and the handful of tortilla chips alongside makes all the difference

So there we have it, a couple of good weeks worth of lunchtime scouting about for food ended up being a couple of weeks eating at the same place. A little bit unusual for me, but I was glad that we checked out the place properly. It will be firmly embedded into the mid week lunch schedule from now on when we have time for a leisurely drive over to Compton Acres

Located at 8a Compton Acres (hence the name) Lowes at No. 8 are open Mon-Sat from early on 8/9am until 4.30pm
