Breakfast at YOLK

The last time I wrote about YOLK in Nottingham was shortly after they had opened back in 2019. I really cannot believe it has taken me so long to return again, especially since I have been next door to 31K many times in those intervening years

Back in 2019 I had eaten some quite tasty bites, a rather decadent Poached Eggs with Maple Bacon on a muffin, and a more simple Scrambled egg with Smoked Salmon on a Bagel (read more here)

At that time they had a menu that encouraged you to ‘Choose your egg‘ then what to ‘…have it on‘ then finally ‘….and top it with‘.

These days they have re-addressed the menu and now serve more distinct classical brunch plates

YOLK BREAKFAST / BRUNCH MENU

While I could easily have been tempted by any of the offerings, such as the EGGS BENEDICT or ROYALE both of which sounded similar to the dishes I at last time I reviewed.

The HASHVILLE also sounded quite good with a mix of sauteed potato, egg and tomato (I would had added diced chorizo).

However good they sounded none of them had a chance as today I was on a mission with plans to check out their Full English

FULL ENGLISH

Their Full English is a little bit pricier than my usual breakfast haunts “Sausage, Bacon, Black Pudding, Egg, Beans, Tomato, Mini Rosti, Mushroom, and Toast” will set you back £14

I was expecting good quality ingredients at that price point and some decent presentation and I wasn’t disappointed when the plate arrived

Two plump herby and meaty sausages, and two slices of very crispy streaky bacon pleased me no end, both cooked just as I like.

I was happy to get a slice of black pudding on my breakfast as all too often that is an optional extra but for the price point at Yolk I guess that’s factored in.

The fried egg was fine just on the edge with the cookery which is ok with me but I know some fussier folks would want it a little firmer. The egg yolk was nice and golden and it had been seasoned aggressively with black pepper (good job I like pepper)

Hidden underneath the fried egg was a juicy well cooked field mushroom. I felt sorry that it didn’t get a chance to make the photograph but perhaps it was shy.

The unexpected star of the plate are the homemade Smokey beans. I really enjoyed dipping my thick slices of toast into that pot and they went really well with the Rosti which turned out to be cubed fried potato.

I enjoyed the roasted vine tomatoes as they are nice and juicy and better than half a sliced one or god forbid some out of a tin. I don’t mind the stalks I am grown up and sensible enough to not try and eat them unlike the random pea tendrils 🤣

All in all a thoroughly decent plateful of food at the upper end of the breakfast price in Notts. I do like my greasy spoon breakfasts but I can appreciate the quality and effort put into this one served to me at YOLK

You can check Yolk out on their social media feeds, InstagramFacebook, and of course as always you can just get off the sofa and walk down the slope in Hockley to find them at 29 Goosegate in Nottingham NG1 1FE
