This Saturday we found ourselves up in Sherwood in need of a spot of brunch, being difficult and always wanting to try somewhere new we meandered around a bit before settling on the Golden Crown Cafe
It looked as good a place as any and the board outside with a picture of a plate of breakfast helped to grab my attention. Peering through the window we could also see a few empty spots which at this time on a Saturday lunch can be a rare thing in these here parts.
So when I said we were looking for brunch you all know that I meant I wanted a breakfast so when the menu arrived I turned straight to the Full English Breakfast section having checked that they were still doing breakfasts
It was here that I made my fatal mistake thinking that the breakfasts were ordered in size Set 1 being smaller that Set 2. I was wrong and without thinking I just pointed at the first one on the list
This was really a Large breakfast in many places ‘2 Bacon, 2 Sausages, 2 Eggs, 2 Hash Browns, 2 Toast, Beans, Mushrooms, and Tomatoes’ for £8.90
It was fortuitous, at least for my waistline, that I didn’t order the Crown Special which was 3 of everything and offered chips instead of 3 slices of Toast! I mean there is enough potato with the 3 Hash Browns!’ Crikey!
SET 1 BREAKFAST (LARGE TO YOU AND I)
Oh my gosh, the picture does not do justice to the vastness of this plate of breakfast! I swear that there was an entire tin of beans and one of tomatoes piled on there!
The well crispy bacon and sausages were buried somewhere beneath, neither getting much look in. Two decent fried eggs with runny yolks lay on top of them.
The Hash Browns were a bit soggy inside but had a nice enough taste, is that onion I detect? They were at least crisp on the outside, one would have been enough
Three half slices of toast were hiding the mushrooms which were another mammoth pile of food. It was a shame as the mushrooms were really good, cut into big pieces they were lovely and juicy, but there was just too many of them
In the end, I am saddened to say that I could not finish it all, there was just too much to eat. I don’t want to complain I should have picked the smallest option lol
CHICKEN AND CHEESE ON TOAST
My partner in dine, the Mother, didn’t want breakfast and to be fair it was well after midday so she was looking at the lighter bites
We asked what the Cheesy Chicken on Toast was and it sounded just like it was named as in a bit of cheese on toast with some chicken.
I suppose in essence that was exactly what it was, but again it was mammoth lol. I swear that there was an entire chicken breast (if not more) piled on top of two slices of toast covered with a mound of molten cheese.
It was lovely but honestly one slice would have been plenty! 😎🤣😍
If you like a big breakfast and good value for money you will love a visit to the Golden Crown Cafe in Sherwood. I will happily come back again but on a day when I have a good appetite and I am feeling very hungry.
They were very friendly and most welcoming, exceptionally generous they were giving every table complimentary croissants. I have to say though that I didn’t see anyone manage to eat any of them though we all had massive plates of our own food to scoff down
