Piccalilli in Nottingham located up inside Cannon Court just off Long Row, is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant run by the excellent Local Chef Dan Coles.
I first encountered Dan and his food when he ran a pop up here in the same space in the restaurant that was formerly Kushi-Ya some years back and I have followed his food adventures ever since.
I have somewhat errantly not managed to cross the threshold of this latest venture but today we were taking our chance as he was running a Mothering Day Sunday Lunch and I brought the Mother over just like many others to try one of his Sunday Roasts

The menu was very similar to the normal Sunday Lunch only with a few tweaks to the accompaniments and with an offer of two courses for £30 or three for £35
ROAST & BRAISED BAVETTE OF BEEF

We forgo the starters and jumped straight to the mains both ordering the Roast and Braised Beef Bavette served with Hispi Cabbage, Carrot purée, Roast Potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding and a Jug of gravy, side dish of Cauliflower Cheese had to be added

The Yorkshire pudding was filled to the brim with a pile of Mouth-wateringly juicy braised beef . It could easily have been a meal just by itself and it was fabulous in its own right. I would come back here again just to eat another one
Along with the braised meats you got two generous slices of roasted bavette both of which were pink and tender just as I prefer. Maybe not everyone likes their meat so rare, each to there own I suppose, I think that they are missing out on so much flavour from the meat juices.
The side of Hispi cabbage, charred lightly was a nice touch, albeit rather large, I enjoyed the almost meaty texture and soft succulent bite , it went well with the the carrot purée that was sweet and smooth giving a nice pop of flavour

The cauliflower cheese made with Red Leicester is possibly the best I have had, super crispy on top, thick gooey sauce and perfectly cooked cauliflower inside. I was happy to pay the extra £6.50!
The potatoes cooked in beef dripping were generous, crispy outside and fluffy inside. We couldn’t finish them all. I did try eating 4 big ones
The gravy was excellent too, deep and rich, packed with flavour bringing everything together on the plate.
As a main course, this was huge and I saw plenty of people taking home some of their dinner in a takeaway box!
MARMALADE TART WITH BURNT MILK ICE CREAM

Despite being totally stuffed we gamely attempted to eat some puddings. When asked if I wanted to see the desert menu I quipped that I really hadn’t a choice as we didn’t pick a starter so I had to at least try to eat my pudding!
For myself the Marmalade treacle tart served with burnt milk ice cream. I loved it and I am not a pudding person! The treacle tart was gooey, the ice cream was like a salted caramel in flavour.
It reminded me of those rich sticky tarts you sometimes got at school only 100 times better
CHOCOLATE PAVE AND CHERRY SORBET

The other pudding was the Chocolate Pave and Cherry Sorbet. The chocolate log was exceptionally rich, very chocolatey, too much for my savoury tastebuds but I suspect an absolute dream for the lover of chocolate. The cherry sorbet surprisingly refreshing, not quite a palate cleanser but light enough and certainly a great end to the meal
Today was good day and a fantastic meal. I would heartily recommend coming to Piccalilli for a Sunday Lunch, I reckon it is the best one we have eaten in Nottingham over the last year and I am contemplating my next visit to eat one again!
Located at 1A Cannon Court in Nottingham, NG1 6JE you will find Piccalilli just off Long Row up a small alley. If you knew where Kushi-Ya or the Alley Cafe used to be you will find it
Check them out on their Website, Instagram Feed and Facebook Page for up to date details and picture of the food for you to drool over
FLOWERS FOR MUM

Finally a thanks for the bunch of daffodils presented to my Mother and indeed all the Mothers today. It was a lovely gesture and one most appreciated by all.
