Today we headed up to the Esquires Coffee Shop in Clifton for some brunch. That really means that some of us were still in breakfast mode while others were ready for lunch
This branch in Clifton opened recently and although I had figured it must be part of a chain I was surprised to read that it had originated from Delta in British Columbia, now that is a long way from the estate!
I read on their website that the ethos was to ‘recognise the value in providing cosy café experiences for local communities’ and building an ethical cafe group with outstanding cafes owned and operated by local people’
First impressions were that it was a bright warm welcoming spot, very relaxed and a comfortable place to hang out at
Anyway Brunch! There were three of us out today on the MyFoodHunt tour of Clifton so we planned to try a few dishes (or rather I hoped my companions would all get something different so I had more to write about)
BREAKFAST MENU

Without any great surprise I was having the Breakfast 😎😜
The menu described ESQUIRES FULL ENGLISH as “Rasher of cooked bacon, pork and herb sausage, tomato, large mushroom, tiny taters, two eggs (poached or scrambled), and baked beans served with two slices of toasted sourdough and a buttered portion”
It sounded good to me and also added some merriment and conversation as I was certainly hoping that my bacon was going to be cooked! Also ‘a buttered portion’? That is the poshest way ever of described a bit of wrapped up butter!
ESQUIRES FULL ENGLISH

I picked scrambled egg and there was a lot of it! As I ate it I pondered that the ‘Scrambled Eggs’ for £6.85 might be a good future option, but enough back to breakfast!
The sausage was indeed made of pork and was herby, it had a decent solid bite and was meaty so that was good! Happily nowhere near catering level.
The bacon was crisped up and the fat rendered very well. nice flavour but could have been bigger it was a really small slice. The tiny tots were named appropriately as they were indeed very small
The mushroom and the tomatoes were juicy and cooked all the way through so that the juices flowed out. The sourdough toast was not as chewy as some I have had and I used it mostly for moppage of the beans and tomatoes. I reckon one slice of toast would have been enough
All in all for £11.45 at first this sounded a bit more than I usually like to pay but it was actually a pretty good sized plateful and a decent breakfast.
It wasn’t my normal dirty fry up but I did really enjoy it and was pleasantly full after scoffing it
JACKET POTATO MENU

When it comes to Jacket Spuds I am a simple man and liked my topped with beans and cheese, chilli and cheese, or sometimes tuna may and cheese.
Here at Esquires they are a bit fancier offering toppings such as Chicken Tikka. Pesto Chicken, Pulled Pork, and Avocado with Halloumi. They all sound pretty tasty
JACKET POTATO WITH CHICKEN TIKKA

One of us picked out the JACKET POTATO WITH CHICKEN TIKKA that was priced up at £7.25. To be fair this was another good sized portion. More than I would care to pay but I do usually get mine from a van in town 😜😎
It was a massive potato and there was enough topping to cover two baked spuds so you couldn’t grumble. It was pleasing to find plenty of decent chunks of chicken too
The spud came with a nice salad of mixed leaves and tomato which went well with it perhaps adding something cooling to counter the spicy sauce and something crunchy to balance with the creaminess.
HAM AND CHEESE MELT

The last of the dishes scoffed to day was a HAM AND CHEESE MELT chosen by my Cousin on National Cousins Day (a pure coincidence that we met today!)
Described on the menu as “British ham, cheddar, mozzarella, bechamel sauce, and whole grained mustard“ for £6.25 this was the cheapest of the brunch dishes we ordered but it was definitely not the least worthy of scoffage
It seemed to be a cross between a toastie and a croque monsieur which was a good hybrid combination
It was declared to be excellent, massive, and very tasty. I even got offered a bite so there was plenty to be shared!
I do believe that these Melts are considered to be one of Esquires signature items and it was easy to see why. It was another huge sandwich that came served with a nice crisp salad ( no sad soggy leaves to be found here 😍)
Overall Esquires did seem a bit pricey for Clifton but the portion sizes were good and the food was good quality so we didn’t mind and with Coffees it was just around £36 which really isn’t bad these days for three of us
If was a lovely spot to sit and eat it, very open, very airy and seemed very welcoming.
I for one will be back. Will it be for another breakfast? Maybe, although I do have my eyes on the Poached Eggs on Toast with a side of bacon obviously!
