Mak Halal on Alfreton Road is another one in the long line of takeaway burger joints popping up all over the city. With outlets across the West Midlands, mostly Birmingham and now in Nottingham and Cardiff they are looking to ‘celebrate the concept of Halal.
On their website they say they “wanted to build an environment where food lovers could socialise, share their mutual appreciation for burgers and have a great time“
Sounds fair enough to me so with some hopefulness I headed up to grab a burger.
I am quite fond of the smashed style of burger where they literally smash down a ball of meat onto a hot grill surface to get a really thin charred burger. If they are down well then they are fantastic.
With that in mind I perused their ‘Smashed Mac’ section of the menu where they were offering 6 different smashed burger options.
SUPERSTAR BURGER ON MENU
I was briefly tempted by the SUPERSTAR which was ‘2 Smashed Beef Patties, Egg, Chicken Rashers, Gherkins, Lettuce, Onions, Tomatoes, Cheese & Sauce‘ mostly because of the addition of a fried egg, I am total egg slut
In the end I played it safe ordering most basic of their smashed burger options the ORIGINAL BURGER which was billed as being ‘2 Smashed Beef Patties, Lettuce, Cheese & Sauce‘
What can I say? This was not the prettiest burger I have eaten and it was all a bit ‘squished’ up in the packaging but having said that it was a very ‘comforting’ burger to eat.
The meat was juicy, perhaps it could have been ‘smashed’ a bit more on the flat top to get more crispiness on the edges and get that charred flavour.
The cheese was melted so that it coated the burger patties properly and I liked the sauce. I am not sure I recall much lettuce but perhaps that is not a bad thing of you are in full salad dodger mode.
Most importantly would I have another burger from Mak Halal? Yeh I am not adversed to the idea, it was as I said a tasty and comforting bite of food and more often that not that is all I am looking for when I get a takeaway.
On the delivery sites they have a Mak Deal 1 which is a ‘Mak Cheese Burger, Any Medium Pizza, Fries, Drink and 2 Dips‘ for just £11.99’
There have been many nights when I have contemplated that deal mainly for the volume of food on offer and because more often than not I cannot decide between pizza or burger 🤣😍🤷♂️
